What Is Plant-Based Packaging and How It Works ?

2024-03-15

Plant-based packaging refers to packaging materials that are derived from renewable plant sources, such as corn, sugarcane, bamboo, or various forms of cellulose. Plant-based packaging is considered more sustainable because it is biodegradable, compostable, and often requires fewer resources to produce compared to conventional packaging materials. It aligns with the principles of reducing reliance on non-renewable resources and minimizing environmental impact in the packaging industry.

Generally speaking, PLA is one of the most commonly used plant-based packaging materials, and PLA is also the hottest topic in sustainable packaging.

What is PLA ?

PLA, or polylactic acid, is a biodegradable polymer renowned for its sustainable attributes.

Derived predominantly from renewable resources such as corn starch or sugarcane, PLA represents a departure from traditional petroleum-based plastics. Its production relies on fermentation processes that convert plant sugars into lactic acid, which subsequently undergoes polymerization to form PLA. This reliance on renewable feedstocks mitigates the environmental impact associated with conventional plastics, which are derived from fossil fuels. Moreover, PLA's biodegradability distinguishes it further, as it can decompose into non-toxic components under appropriate conditions, offering a solution to the pervasive issue of plastic pollution.

How does it biodegradable?

1. The breakdown of plant-based packaging occurs through microbial activity, enzymatic degradation and abiotic factors under various environmental conditions.

2. Microorganisms such as bacteria and fungi metabolize the organic compounds present in plant-based packaging when disposed of in a composting facility or soil environment with sufficient moisture, oxygen, and temperature. This enzymatic activity breaks down the polymer chains of the packaging material into smaller molecules, ultimately converting them into water, carbon dioxide and organic matter.

3. This biodegradation process is facilitated by the presence of specific enzymes that target chemical bonds within the polymer structure, accelerating the breakdown of plant-based packaging into harmless substances.

If you're looking for sustainable packaging for your business, Biodegradable Bags are a great option. At MST PACK, we always listen to the requirements of our customers and specify the best packaging as per their needs. We work with some food companies, such as 12 tides. Sustainability is extremely important to the brand ethos, which is why our Biodegradable Packaging was chosen for this project.

With the new OPRL scheme (which now includes PP materials) coming into effect on January 1, 2022, now is actually a good time to invest in sustainable plastic packaging.
